If we want to make healthy changes we have to set a clear goal for ourselves.  The SMART goal setting technique can help you.

SMART Goals Handout Sheet

Specific

Goals that are specific are more likely to be achieved than a more general goal.  To make your goal specific you have to ask some questions.  WHAT do I want to accomplish.  WHY do I want to accomplish it.  WHEN do I want to accomplish it.

Non Specific Goal Specific Goal
Eat more healthily. Eat 5 helpings of vegetables every day.
Lose weight. I will lose 10lbs to fit into my skinny jeans.
Get in shape I will join the gym and work out 3 days a week.

Measurable

This is where you set absolute criteria for measuring your progress towards achieving your goal.  This focuses you so you can stay on track and meet target dates.  The questions to be asked are things like HOW much?  HOW many?  HOW will I know when I have accomplished my goal?

Achievable

This is your reality check.  Maybe you are trying to do too much, too fast.  Maybe the skinny jeans are several sizes away … will you be willing to make that commitment to the goal.  Or maybe you should break it down into smaller targets.

Relevant

Your goal should be relevant to you and your other life priorities.  If it’ something someone else wants you to do forget it.  If it’s not something you want, or that’s relevant to you you’ll give up early on.

Timed

Set a reasonable date for achieving your goal – don’t be so ambitious that you set yourself up to fail, but don’t aim too low either.

AND DON’T FORGET TO SET UP WHAT YOUR REWARD WILL BE WHEN YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL
